Wix vs a custom website: which is right for you?

By Scott Lovel · · 3 min read

Short answer: Wix is a good fit when you need a simple site fast and you are happy to build and update it yourself. A custom website is the better fit when your site has to do real work for your business, like booking the way you actually schedule, taking payments, or connecting to how you run your day, or when you want to fully own what you paid for.

What Wix does well

Wix earns its popularity. You can sign up, choose a template and have something online the same day. Hosting is included, the drag and drop editor is easy to learn, and there is an app for almost everything. For a brand new business that needs a basic online presence, that is a real advantage.

  • Fast to start, with no technical skills needed
  • Hosting, security certificates and updates handled for you
  • Lots of templates and add-on apps
  • Easy to change text and photos yourself

Where Wix starts to pinch

You are renting, not owning

A Wix site lives on Wix. You cannot pick up the site and move it to another host, so if you ever want to leave, you rebuild. Your domain can move, but the website itself stays behind.

The apps add up

Booking, forms, email marketing, reviews and payments usually come from separate apps, each with its own plan. Over time, many businesses end up paying for several subscriptions that do not quite talk to each other. Our software cost calculator is a quick way to add up what you are paying today.

Your process has to fit the app

Booking apps assume any open slot can be filled. That does not work for a stylist whose color appointments run long, a bakery that bakes a set number of loaves, or a contractor who has to see the property before quoting. When the tool sets the rules, you end up working around it with texts and spreadsheets.

Looking like everyone else

Templates are popular because they work, which also means plenty of businesses in your industry may be using the same one. For a local business competing on trust and personality, standing out matters.

What "custom" actually means

A custom website is designed from a blank page around your business and built to do exactly what you need. At Sea Grape Labs that means:

  • A design that looks like your business, not a template
  • Features that follow your rules, such as visit requests you approve or preorders with limits
  • One system instead of a stack of apps: your website, bookings, payments and admin share the same records
  • Your site, domain and content set up in your business's name
  • Fast loading on phones and set up for local search from day one

Three real examples

DeeDee Beaupre Salon in Jupiter needed booking where nothing is confirmed until she says yes, because color can run long. Clients ask for a time and send a photo of their hair, and she approves it or offers another time. That rule is hard to get from an off the shelf booking app.

Seaside Sourdough in Jupiter Farms sells weekly preorder drops with limits on every item, porch pickup windows and delivery priced by distance, all run from one bakery admin.

Shoots & Roots and Busy Blades, two Jupiter family businesses for trees and land and for weekly lawn care, needed one site that sends each customer to the right crew and one office system for leads, estimates, jobs, crews and invoices behind both.

Moving off Wix without losing your Google rankings

If your Wix site already shows up on Google, switching does not have to cost you that. The key steps are to keep your domain, carry over the pages and content that rank, and redirect every old address to its new page so search engines follow along. Done carefully, customers and Google both land in the right place on day one.

A quick way to decide

  • Stay on Wix if you mainly need a few pages, you like editing it yourself, and the apps you use fit how you work.
  • Go custom if you are paying for several apps that do not connect, your booking or ordering has rules the apps cannot follow, your site looks like your competitors', or you want to own what you paid for.
